Although Augustus Hess served with N Battery of the Royal Horse Artillery he was, at the time of his death, temporarily attached to 103 Battery, 31 Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery part of 28th Division which in February, 1915 was holding the line to the south of Ypres.

On 25th February, 1915 he was in the officer's hut of the battery when it was struck by a shell which killed him.
